Phantom Radio
Phantom radio est le résultat créatif d'un atelier dirigé par Valentijn Goethals et un groupe d'étudiant·es expérimentant de nouveaux potentiels dans le domaine de la radio. Dans un avenir proche, l'espace éphémère entre 88 et 108 MHz deviendra vacant en raison du passage à la radio numérique. Phantom Radio veut rechercher de nouvelles interprétations artistiques de cet espace mental et physique. Comment les artistes peuvent ils utiliser ce lieu non conventionnel ? L'utilisation parasite et hyperlocale de cet espace privatisé permet d'échapper aux limitations légales du médium. Comment ces restrictions peuvent elles encore renforcer la créativité et la production ? Comment créer de la visibilité là où il n'y a rien à voir ? Phantom Radio veut devenir une extension de l'infrastructure de travail et d'exposition invisible de l'école.

Bio : Valentijn Goethals (°1987) est graphiste, artiste visuel et musicien.
Il est diplômé en 2012 de la Werkplaats Typografie à Arnhem (NL). En plus d'enseigner au département d'architecture de la KULeuven, Valentijn est actif en tant que coordinateur artistique du programme d'expositions au Kunsthal Gent et membre actif de l'équipe de coordination et membre fondateur de 019. Outre la réalisation d'expositions, Valentijn est également responsable du (graphique) design des deux organisations et il organise chaque année la Foire du livre d'art de Gand depuis 2015.
Phantom radio is the creative outcome of a workshop run by Valentijn Goethals and a group of students experimenting with new potentials within the field of radio. In the nearby future, the ephemeral space between 88 and 108 MHz will become vacant due to the shift towards digital radio. Phantom Radio wants to research new artistic interpretations of this mental and physical space. How can artists use this unconventional place? Parasitic and hyperlocal use of this privatised space makes it possible to escape the legal limitations of the medium. How can these restrictions further strengthen creativity and production? How do you create visibility where there is nothing to see? Phantom Radio wants to become an extension of the school's invisible work and exhibition infrastructure.
Phantom Radio opens on february 1 at 18h, Esä, Dunkerque's site. It will also be accessible throughout the Open days and continue to expand in the future.
Image: a phantom radio billboard designed by Valentijn Goethals & Ine Meganck, built and curated with 019 at the Design museum in Gent. The billboard is an exhibition platform, and in this case it communicates a second, more secret, exhibition platform within the FM spectrum.
Bio : Valentijn Goethals (°1987) is a graphic designer, visual artist and musician.
He graduated in 2012 from the Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem (NL). Besides teaching at the KULeuven department of architecture, Valentijn is active as artistic coordinator for the exhibition program at Kunsthal Gent and an active part of the coordinating team and founding member of 019. Next to exhibition making, Valentijn is also responsible for the (graphic) design of both organisations and he has been organising the Ghent Art Book Fair annually since 2015.
