Exhibitions of contemporary art
DOCUMENTA (Kassel, Germany) and MANIFESTA
In the lecture we’ll look at the reasons for the founding of Documenta in 1955 (the exhibition was supposed to restore the broken tradition of avant-garde exhibitions in Germany, interrupted in 1937 by the Nazis). We’ll see that the Documenta subsequently became one of the most significant events in contemporary art. We look at some of the most striking displays at Kassel exhibitions in the 21st century.
We’ll also analyze the specifics of another biennale ‑ Manifesta the distinctive feature of which is the constant change of places for the exhibitions. Manifesta is considered a biennale of young European art and it has an anti-globalization context.
